What's the difference between a dream and a goal?

Although dreams and goals are used interchangeably, there is a big difference between the two.

Dreams are defined as a big and often vague idea or ambition that you hope to achieve or accomplish in the future.

While goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound objectives that you set for yourself to achieve.

Why do you need both dreams and goals?

Without dreams, you will have no motivation or inspiration to set goals. Dreams give us something to hope for and strive towards; they help us see life's possibilities.

And without goals, your dreams will just remain dreams because they lack a specific plan or actionable steps, meaning you will never be able to achieve or accomplish them.

For example, you may dream of becoming a successful musician, but you have no specific goals to achieve this dream. However, if you set a goal to audition for a music school, then you have something specific and actionable that you can do to help turn your dream into a reality.

It's important to have both dreams and goals because they work hand-in-hand; one cannot exist without the other. Dreams provide the big picture, while goals provide a specific road map on how to get there.

10 Tips for Setting Goals and Achieving Your Dreams

Here are 10 tips that will help you set goals and achieve your dreams: 

1. Define your dreams: What do you want to achieve?

Everyone has dreams, whether to be a successful businessperson, a celebrated artist, or simply happy and fulfilled. We all have something we want to achieve, but only you have the answer to that question.
But how do you go about figuring out what you want to achieve? Start by thinking about what makes you happy.
What are the things that you love doing? What are your passions? What makes you feel alive? When you better understand what brings you joy, you can start to figure out what your dreams might be.
For example, if you're passionate about fashion, your dream might be to become a successful fashion designer.

2. Set specific goals: Without goals, your dream will remain dreams. 

The power of setting goals is often underestimated, people don't realize how crucial having a goal is to achieving anything in life; which is why many never achieve their goals.
Your goals act as a compass, pointing you in the right direction and helping you stay on track.
So If you want to turn your dreams into a reality, you need to set goals; this means knowing what you want to achieve and setting a plan on how you're going to achieve it.
Follow the S.M.A.R.T goal setting method to ensure your goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound.
For example, if your dream is to become a successful fashion designer, your goal could be to start your fashion line that will be sold in high-end stores within five years.
If setting goals start to become overwhelming, break down that goal into smaller, more manageable pieces like creating a prototype of your clothing, finding a manufacturer, creating your first collection, launching a website and marketing your clothing.

3. Create a plan of action: What steps do you need to take to achieve your dream?

Creating a plan of action is key to achieving any goal, big or small; otherwise, it's easy to get sidetracked or lost along the way.
As for the steps you need to take to achieve your dreams, they will vary depending on your dream. However, a good place to start is by writing down your goals, breaking them down into smaller steps, creating a timeline for each one and setting deadlines; each step you take brings you closer to your goal.
With a little bit of planning and a lot of determination, you can make anything happen.

4. Get started: The most important step is to just start.

Although the above are important, perhaps the most important step is getting started.
Don't get me wrong, planning is necessary, but so many get stuck in the planning phase, so "just start", and the rest will follow.
No plan is perfect, and you'll likely make some mistakes along the way, but that's okay; it's all part of the journey.

5. Take action: Pursue your goals, and don't give up on your dreams. 

Taking action means putting in the hard work and dedication required to reach your goals and eventually achieve your dreams.
In a world of instant gratification, we all struggle with delayed gratification, especially when pursuing our dreams. You have to be willing to sacrifice short-term pleasures for long-term gain, which isn't always easy.
Important to not get discouraged if you don't see results right away because there's no such a thing as overnight success.
Whenever you feel like giving up, remind yourself why you started in the first place. What is it that you want to achieve? How will achieving your dream make you feel? 6. Set deadlines: Hold yourself accountable. 

Setting deadlines will hold you accountable and help you stay on track because deadlines create a sense of urgency.
When setting deadlines, be realistic and give yourself enough time to complete the task but don't be too lenient either, or you'll never get anything done.
If you are consistently missing your deadlines, it might be a good idea to reassess the amount of tasks you can complete in a given time frame; after all, persistence is key.

7. Believe in yourself: You can achieve anything you set your mind to. 

I have self-sabotaged and ruined so many opportunities for myself simply because I didn't believe I could do it.
And that is such a shame because if there's anything I've learned in life, it's that we are capable of achieving so much more than we give ourselves credit for.
Be confident in your abilities and trust that you have what it takes to reach your goals. You need to believe that you can do it even when everyone else is telling you that it's impossible because if you don't believe in yourself, no one else will.
When you start to believe in yourself, you push through the tough times and realize that you can achieve anything.

8. Be flexible: Life happens, and things don't always go according to plan.

No matter how much you plan and prepare, life will always throw curveballs your way, which is why having the ability to be flexible and adaptable is what will help you weather any storm.
If one method isn't working, try something else; do it if you need to take a different path to reach your destination.
You might get sidetracked or run into unexpected challenges, but the important thing is to keep moving forward and keep your eyes on the prize.

9. Enjoy the ride: What's the fun in reaching the destination if you didn't enjoy the journey?
